A brood frame can tell you more about a colony than a busy entrance ever will. When you know how to inspect brood frames, you can see whether the queen is laying well, whether young bees are being raised, and whether something needs attention before it becomes a larger problem. The aim is not to find a perfect-looking frame. It is to build a clear picture of what is normal for that colony, on that day, in that season.
Inspect at the right time
Choose a dry, reasonably warm day when bees are flying, ideally with little wind. In much of the UK, that usually means a late-morning or early-afternoon inspection once the temperature is comfortably above about 14°C. Avoid opening colonies in cold, wet or very gusty weather unless there is an urgent concern. Chilled brood and an irritated colony are poor trade-offs for a routine check.
Have your smoker lit and producing cool, pale smoke before you open the hive. Keep it nearby but use it sparingly. A little smoke at the entrance and under the crownboard is usually enough. Excess smoke sends bees running and makes it harder to read the frame calmly.
Work with a purpose. During the active season, a full brood inspection is often needed every seven days when swarm control is relevant. At other times, particularly during a nectar flow or when the colony is light on stores, limit disturbance to what you genuinely need to know. Some inspections can be brief checks for space, food and obvious problems rather than a prolonged examination of every frame.
How to inspect brood frames step by step
After removing the roof and crownboard, look first at the top bars and the underside of the crownboard. Fresh white wax, crowded bees or queen cups may indicate that the colony is expanding or considering swarming. Then remove an outside frame first, rather than levering out a brood frame in the middle and rolling bees against the box wall. If the outside frame is full of stores, set it carefully in a frame holder or clean upturned roof, covered where possible to discourage robbing.
Create enough space to lift the next frame straight up. Hold it securely by both lugs, keeping it over the open brood box so that the queen or any falling bees return to the hive. Do not shake brood frames unless you have a specific reason. A slow brush of long, deliberate movements is preferable if you must clear a small area, but usually there is no need.
Look at one side first, then rotate the frame on its vertical axis to view the other side. Do not turn it flat like a tray. That can damage soft wax, dislodge nectar and puts the comb at greater risk of breaking, especially in warm weather. Keep the frame low over the hive and avoid standing in front of the entrance.
As you inspect, move frames gently along in the same order. Once you have finished, replace them tightly together in their original arrangement, return the removed frame, and close the hive without trapping bees. Recording what you saw immediately is one of the best habits a beekeeper can build. A few useful notes are better than relying on memory a week later.
What healthy brood usually looks like
A strong laying queen often produces a broad, compact area of worker brood. In the centre you may see eggs, pearly white larvae in pools of royal jelly, capped brood and newly emerged cells all together. This overlap is normal because a queen lays continuously while workers develop at different stages.
Fresh eggs are easiest to spot when the sun is behind you and the light falls into the cells. Look for one egg at the base of a cell, standing upright when newly laid and gradually leaning over as it develops. A single egg per cell is reassuring, although the queen may occasionally place one imperfectly. Do not diagnose a problem from one unusual cell.
Healthy worker brood cappings are generally buff to light brown, dry-looking and gently domed. The pattern does not need to be wall-to-wall. Pollen bands, areas of nectar, drone brood near the lower edges and patches where bees have emerged can all create gaps. Early spring colonies, newly mated queens, colonies recovering from a split, and colonies under pressure from poor forage may all show less impressive patterns for understandable reasons.
The key question is whether the brood pattern makes sense in context. Are there eggs and young larvae to show the queen has been present very recently? Are the larvae white, plump and neatly curled in their cells? Is there a reasonable progression from eggs to capped brood? A colony with a smaller but coherent brood nest may be in better order than one with a large but erratic one.
Finding the queen is useful, not always essential
Seeing the queen is satisfying, especially for newer beekeepers, but it is not the only proof that a colony is queenright. Eggs and very young larvae are often enough for a routine inspection. Searching every bee on every frame adds time and disturbance, and it can lead to missed signs elsewhere.
If you cannot see eggs, take more care. The queen may be present but temporarily not laying, perhaps because of weather, lack of forage, a recent swarm or a seasonal slowdown. Check for queen cells, capped brood and the colony’s overall behaviour. When there is genuine doubt, close up, make a clear note and plan a follow-up inspection rather than jumping to a conclusion on one visit.
Signs that deserve a closer look
A scattered brood pattern can have several causes. An older or failing queen is one possibility, but so are chilled brood, poor mating, varroa pressure, disease, a shortage of food or a colony that is simply shrinking towards autumn. Look for accompanying evidence before deciding what to do.
Pay attention to cappings that are sunken, greasy-looking, perforated or unusually dark. Larvae that are discoloured, melted down, twisted unnaturally or lying across the cell rather than curled at the base also warrant concern. A sour or unpleasant smell is another reason to stop and assess carefully, although smell alone is not a reliable diagnosis.
If you suspect foulbrood or another serious brood disease, do not move frames, bees or equipment to another apiary. Close the colony as gently as possible, make a note of what you observed and seek advice from the National Bee Unit or your local bee inspector. Avoid improvised tests or treatments that could spread contamination or obscure the diagnosis.
Varroa-related damage may appear as patchy brood, bees emerging with deformed wings, or cells with developing bees that do not look right. However, visual signs often arrive after mite levels have become significant. Use an appropriate monitoring method and a planned treatment approach rather than judging varroa levels solely from what you see on a brood frame.
Read brood frames with the season
In spring, brood should normally be expanding, but colonies can be caught by a cold spell or a gap in forage. Check that they have enough accessible stores before assuming a modest brood area is a queen problem. A colony can look busy on a warm day while still being short of food.
During late spring and early summer, inspect thoroughly enough to identify swarm preparations. Charged queen cells, containing an egg or larva and often royal jelly, matter far more than empty play cups. Check the lower edges and faces of brood combs carefully, but remember that swarm control is a separate decision from judging brood health.
By late summer and autumn, the brood nest often contracts. A smaller area of brood is expected, and stores may occupy more of the frames. The focus shifts towards colony strength, queen performance, disease awareness, varroa management and adequate winter food. In winter, opening and pulling brood frames is usually unnecessary and disruptive unless there is a specific welfare concern.
Make each inspection easier to interpret
New beekeepers often try to inspect everything at once: queen, brood pattern, swarm cells, stores, temperament and varroa. It is better to pause at each frame and ask a few simple questions: what stage of brood is present, does it look healthy, and does this frame fit the wider story of the colony?
A notebook or apiary record helps reveal changes that one inspection cannot. Record the date, weather, number of frames covered by bees, approximate brood area, queen cells, stores, temperament and any action taken. A photo can also be useful for comparing a doubtful brood pattern later, provided you do not prolong the inspection simply to get it.
With practice, brood inspections become less about hunting for faults and more about recognising a colony’s rhythm. Be calm, lift frames carefully, trust the evidence in front of you, and ask for experienced support early when that evidence does not add up.
