A Guide to Beeswax Candle Making at Home

A jar of pale beeswax may look ready for a candle, but the finished burn is decided long before the wax reaches the mould. The cleanliness of the wax, the diameter of the candle and, above all, the wick must work together. This guide to beeswax candle making explains the practical choices that turn surplus cappings or bought wax into candles that smell gently of honey and burn properly.

Beeswax is a rewarding material for beekeepers because it gives the comb a second useful life. It is also less forgiving than many blended candle waxes. Pure beeswax has a relatively high melting point, shrinks as it cools, and needs a larger wick than a similarly sized paraffin candle. Taking a little care at each stage is far more effective than trying to fix a poor burn once the candle is made.

Choose the right beeswax for the candle

Fresh, light-coloured cappings wax is usually the best choice for candles. It has a clean scent, fewer impurities and produces a warm golden finish. Older brood-comb wax is often darker and may carry more debris, propolis and the odour of the hive. It can still be useful, but it is usually better reserved for practical household candles unless it has been thoroughly cleaned.

Wax bought in blocks or pellets is the simplest option for a first project. If you are using your own harvest, remember that wax is a food-contact material in the hive and can hold residues. Avoid wax from unknown sources, particularly for candles intended as gifts or for sale. Good wax begins with good beekeeping hygiene.

The natural colour will vary from almost ivory to deep amber, depending on forage, age and processing. That variation is part of beeswax’s character. There is no need to bleach it or add fragrance: clean beeswax already has a subtle, distinctive aroma.

Equipment for beeswax candle making

You do not need specialist machinery to make a few container or moulded candles, but a safe set-up matters. Use a dedicated pouring jug or heatproof metal container, a saucepan for a water bath, a thermometer, scales, a stirring utensil and prepared candle containers or moulds. You will also need suitable wick, wick tabs for container candles, a wick-centring tool and a heatproof surface for cooling.

Never melt beeswax directly in a pan over a flame. Wax can overheat and ignite. A bain-marie gives gentler, more controllable heat: place the wax in a pouring jug or smaller pan sitting in water, rather than letting it touch the base of the main saucepan. Keep water out of the wax, as even a small amount can cause spitting when hot wax is poured.

Work in a clear, well-ventilated area, keep children and pets away, and have a lid or fire blanket nearby. Do not use water on a wax fire. If wax does ignite, turn off the heat if safe to do so and smother the flame with a lid or fire blanket.

Filter wax before you melt it for candles

Raw wax nearly always contains fragments of comb, pollen, bee parts and propolis. These particles may seem harmless, but they can block the wick and cause a weak, uneven flame. Filter before the final candle pour.

First melt the wax slowly in the water bath until it is fully liquid, usually around 65-75°C. Pour it through a coarse metal sieve or muslin into a heatproof container, then allow it to set. For particularly clean wax, remelt and filter again through a finer filter. Avoid paper coffee filters for large quantities: they clog quickly and can make the process frustrating.

Let the wax cool without stirring. Remaining fine debris will tend to settle towards the bottom, where it can be scraped away from the hardened wax. The aim is not laboratory-perfect wax. It is wax clean enough that the wick can draw fuel consistently.

Select a candle style and wick

For beginners, small container candles are often easier than free-standing pillars. The jar supports the candle as it burns and reduces the risk of wax running across a table. Silicone moulds are another straightforward choice, especially for decorative shapes. Rolled beeswax sheet candles are the quickest option of all, requiring no melting, but they are a different craft from poured candle making.

Wick choice is the main technical part of the process. A wick that is too small creates a narrow melt pool, tunnels down the centre and may eventually drown in its own wax. A wick that is too large gives an oversized flame, a deep melt pool, soot and faster burning. Beeswax generally needs a larger wick than other waxes, but there is no universal wick size because jar diameter, wax colour, fragrance additions and draughts all affect performance.

Buy cotton wick specified for beeswax and use the supplier’s sizing guide as a starting point. For a container around 7 cm wide, test at least two nearby wick sizes rather than committing to one. A wider vessel may need two wicks, but only if testing shows that a single wick cannot create a sensible melt pool. Adding wicks increases heat, so it is not automatically the safer answer.

Pouring your beeswax candles

Clean and dry your containers or moulds. Set the wick centrally, securing it with a wick tab in a jar or threading it through the mould base. Keep it upright with a peg, wick bar or simple wooden stick laid across the top.

Melt filtered beeswax slowly to about 70-75°C. This is generally hot enough to pour smoothly without holding it at excessive temperatures. Overheating can darken the wax, reduce its natural scent and make handling less safe. If you use a thermometer, trust it rather than judging solely by appearance.

Warm glass containers very slightly if your workspace is cold. A sudden temperature difference can contribute to adhesion marks or, in rare cases, cracked glass. Pour steadily, leaving a little space at the top of a jar. For pillars, follow the mould maker’s guidance on fill level and release method.

As beeswax cools, it commonly forms a dip around the wick. This is normal shrinkage rather than a failed candle. Reserve a small amount of melted wax, then make a second, shallow pour once the first layer has set but is still warm. A gentle poke beside the wick before topping up can help fill hidden air pockets in thicker candles.

Allow candles to cool naturally at room temperature. Moving them into a cold shed, refrigerator or draughty spot may cause cracks, frosting or a rough surface. Once fully cool, trim the wick to roughly 5-6 mm.

Cure, test and correct common problems

Give poured beeswax candles several days to settle before their first proper burn. Although beeswax does not require curing in the same way as heavily fragranced wax blends, a short rest helps the candle stabilise and gives you a fairer test.

Burn-test every new combination of wax, wick and vessel. Place the candle on a heatproof surface away from curtains and draughts, then let it burn for two to three hours, while never leaving it unattended. Observe the flame, the melt pool and the condition of the wick. A good result is a calm flame, minimal smoke and a melt pool that expands gradually without becoming excessively deep.

If the candle tunnels, try a larger wick on the next batch. If the flame is tall, flickers heavily or makes soot, move down a wick size. A mushroom-shaped carbon deposit usually means the wick is too large, the wick has not been trimmed, or the candle is burning in a draught. Trim it before relighting rather than allowing the deposit to grow.

Surface cracks and sinkholes are normally cooling issues. Slower cooling and a second pour usually solve them. Wet-looking patches on the side of a glass jar are mostly cosmetic and can happen as natural wax contracts. They do not necessarily affect the burn.

Make and use beeswax candles responsibly

A pure beeswax candle is a lovely use for wax, but bees need wax too. Leave enough sound comb for your colonies, particularly when replacing old frames or preparing colonies for winter. Cappings from honey extraction are often the most sensible source, because they are produced as part of normal honey harvesting.

For gifts, label candles clearly as beeswax and include basic burning instructions: keep the wick trimmed, burn on a suitable surface, and stop use when only a small layer of wax remains. If you plan to sell regularly, keep records of your wax source, wick tests and batch dates. Consistent testing is what makes a handmade product dependable.

Start with one small jar or mould and treat it as a trial, not a final verdict. The pleasure of beeswax candle making lies in learning what your own wax does, then making the next candle a little better than the last.
