How to Spot Swarming Signs in Your Hive

A colony that looked settled a week ago can be hanging in the neighbour’s apple tree by lunchtime. That is why learning how to spot swarming signs matters so much. If you can read the colony a little earlier, you have more options, less disruption and a better chance of keeping both your bees and your honey crop on track.

Swarming is normal bee behaviour, not a sign that you have failed. A strong colony in spring and early summer is built to reproduce. The beekeeper’s job is not to stop bees behaving like bees. It is to recognise the build-up, judge the timing, and make practical decisions before the old queen leaves with a large flying force.

How to spot swarming signs before the bees go

The earliest signs are usually inside the hive, not in the air. By the time you see a cloud of bees pouring out of the entrance, you are already late. Good swarm prevention starts with regular inspections, careful note-taking and a realistic sense of what a crowded colony looks like in your area.

In most parts of the UK, the risk rises quickly from late April onwards, depending on weather, forage and colony strength. A warm spell after a slow start can compress everything. Colonies that seemed behind can catch up fast, and that is where newer beekeepers often get caught out.

Queen cups are not the same as swarm cells

Many keepers panic when they see queen cups. Empty cups on their own are not proof of swarming intent. Bees often keep a few cups in place as part of normal housekeeping. The picture changes when those cups are charged with royal jelly and a larva, especially when there are several of them along the lower edges or faces of brood combs.

If you find polished cups one week and charged queen cells the next, take that seriously. A colony can move from thinking about swarming to being very close to issuing a swarm in a short window, particularly in good weather.

A crowded brood nest is a major warning sign

One of the clearest clues is congestion. If the brood nest is packed wall to wall, with little room for the queen to lay, the colony is moving towards a decision. Bees may backfill brood frames with nectar, reducing laying space even further. That combination of strength, pressure and limited room often comes before swarm preparation.

This is where context matters. A booming colony on oilseed rape or strong spring forage can fill space rapidly. Simply adding a super may help with nectar storage, but it does not always solve brood nest congestion. If the queen has nowhere sensible to lay, adding space above is only part of the answer.

Changes in brood pattern and queen behaviour

A queen preparing to swarm is often slimmed down by the workers so she can fly. You will not always notice this directly, but you may see the effects. Egg laying can slow. The brood pattern may start to look less expansive than you expect for a colony of that size. The queen may also seem harder to find because the colony is in transition.

That said, a reduced brood pattern does not automatically mean swarming. Poor weather, queen age, disease and forage gaps can also affect brood. This is why one sign alone is rarely enough. You are looking for a cluster of signs, not a single dramatic clue.

Behaviour at the entrance can tell you a lot

Bees do not always announce their plans clearly, but entrance behaviour can support what you find inside. On warm days, a colony thinking of swarming may look restless. You may notice heavier bearding than expected, especially if the hive feels crowded rather than simply hot. Workers can appear busy in a different way – less like ordinary traffic and more like a colony under pressure.

There is a limit to how much you should read into this. Bearding can happen because of heat, humidity or a nectar flow. Busy entrances can simply mean strong forage. External behaviour is useful, but it works best as supporting evidence for what you see on the frames.

The sound and mood of the colony

Experienced beekeepers often say a colony feels different before swarming. That is true, although it is hard to teach because it comes with time. Some hives develop a more charged mood – not necessarily aggressive, just busy and unsettled. The sound can seem higher and more urgent when you open them.

Beginners should not rely on instinct alone. Use what you can measure: queen cells, congestion, stores in the brood nest, and the number of frames covered with bees. Instinct becomes more useful once you have seen several seasons and compared notes with what actually happened afterwards.

How to inspect for swarming signs properly

If you want to know how to spot swarming signs reliably, inspection method matters. Quick looks under the crownboard are not enough in swarm season. You need to examine brood frames carefully and systematically.

Work through the brood box frame by frame. Look especially along the bottom bars and lower edges of the comb, but do not stop there. Swarm cells can also appear on the face of the frame. Check whether queen cups are empty, polished, or charged. Note how much open brood there is, whether the queen has space to lay, and whether nectar is being stored where eggs and larvae ought to be.

Frequency matters too. During the swarm season, many UK beekeepers inspect every seven days. Stretch that to ten or fourteen in warm conditions and you can miss the critical point. Once cells are sealed, the prime swarm may leave sooner than you would like.

Signs that mean act now, not later

A few findings should move you from observation to action. Multiple charged queen cells in a strong colony are the clearest example. A packed brood nest with little laying room and queen cells in preparation is another. If you also know the weather is set fair for the coming days, delaying can cost you the old queen and a large part of your flying bees.

There are edge cases. Colonies may start queen cells because they are superseding a failing queen rather than swarming. Supersedure cells are often fewer in number and more central on the comb, but bees do not always follow textbook patterns. If you are unsure, look at the whole colony. Is it crowded and booming, or modest in size and clearly replacing a poor queen? The answer changes what you should do next.

Common mistakes when reading swarm signs

The first mistake is treating every queen cup as an emergency. The second is assuming extra supers will always prevent swarming. The third is inspecting too quickly and missing charged cells on the edges of brood comb.

Another common error is waiting for obvious outside signs. By then, you are often behind. Swarming decisions are made inside the hive first. If your records show a colony has been expanding hard for two or three weeks, that alone should sharpen your attention.

Weather also catches people out. A colony may prepare to swarm and then hold because conditions turn poor. That pause can create false confidence. The moment the weather improves, they may go. What looked stable was only delayed.

What experienced keepers notice earlier

More experienced beekeepers often pick up subtle combinations rather than headline signs. They notice when the brood box feels full in a way that is different from normal spring growth. They see nectar being pushed into brood space. They recognise that a colony covering nearly every seam of bees has crossed from healthy expansion into crowding.

They also think in terms of timing. A large colony with drones present, forage coming in strongly and a run of warm days ahead is a different proposition from a similar colony in cold winds and poor flight weather. Swarm risk is never only about what is in the hive. It is also about whether conditions outside support departure.

For beginners, the practical lesson is simple: compare each inspection with the last one. Do not just ask, “What do I see today?” Ask, “What has changed since last week?” That question catches swarm build-up earlier.

If you are not sure, be cautious

There is no prize for bravado in swarm season. If a colony is strong, crowded and building queen cells, assume they are serious unless you have good evidence otherwise. Being slightly early with swarm control is usually easier than being a day late.

That does not mean every colony needs heavy-handed intervention. Some need more room. Some need a proper artificial swarm. Some are replacing a queen. The right response depends on the colony in front of you, your equipment, your confidence level and how often you can inspect.

If you are still learning, this is where practical training helps. Watching someone identify charged cells, brood nest congestion and true swarm preparation on real frames is much clearer than reading diagrams.

The main thing is to stay observant rather than anxious. Bees usually give notice before they swarm, but the signs are easiest to read when you inspect regularly, keep records, and resist the urge to guess. Catch the change early, and the colony is still telling you what it plans to do.
