How to Prepare Hives for Winter in the UK

A colony can look busy on a warm September afternoon and still be poorly placed for February. Winter losses are rarely caused by one icy night alone. More often, they follow a combination of varroa pressure, insufficient stores, a failing queen, damp conditions or a colony that went into autumn too small. Knowing how to prepare hives for winter means dealing with those risks while the bees can still respond.

For UK beekeepers, the key work is generally done from late summer through autumn. The exact timing depends on your local forage, weather and whether you are still taking a crop, but the principle is simple: aim to leave a healthy, well-fed colony with enough young, long-lived winter bees before temperatures drop.

Start with colony health, not insulation

A hive cannot be wrapped out of a health problem. Before thinking about mouse guards or roof insulation, assess the colony’s strength, queen status and varroa level. A decent brood pattern, enough adult bees to cover the brood and a laying queen are encouraging signs. Scattered brood, dwindling numbers or obvious signs of disease deserve attention before winter arrives.

Varroa management is especially time-sensitive. Varroa weakens the very bees that need to live through winter and raise the first brood in spring. Once honey supers intended for harvest are removed, use an appropriate treatment according to its label and the current conditions. Treatments differ in temperature range, duration and suitability when brood is present, so do not treat by habit alone. Monitor mite levels where possible and keep a record of what you used and when.

If you suspect a notifiable disease, do not move the colony or its equipment. Seek advice from the relevant bee health authorities. It is better to pause and get a clear diagnosis than to risk spreading a problem through an apiary or to neighbouring beekeepers.

Deal with weak colonies early

A very small colony is not automatically doomed, but it needs an honest assessment. A colony with a poor queen, little brood and few bees in early autumn may not have enough time to recover. In some cases, uniting it with a stronger, healthy colony gives both sets of bees a better prospect than nursing two weak units through winter.

Do not unite colonies simply because one looks smaller than another. Consider its queen, brood pattern, disease status and available stores. Never combine a colony that may be diseased with a healthy one.

Check and build winter stores

Bees need food above all else. A full-sized colony commonly needs roughly 18-20 kg of usable stores for a UK winter, although the true requirement varies with hive type, colony size, location, exposure and the length of the season. Colonies in colder or more exposed sites may need more. A small colony naturally consumes less, but it is also less able to cope with a long cold spell.

Hefting is the practical skill worth learning. Lift the back of the hive just enough to judge its weight, then compare it with a hive you know is well supplied. With experience, this tells you far more than a quick look through the crownboard. Record your impressions so that you can spot a hive becoming dangerously light later in the season.

If stores are short while the weather remains warm enough for bees to take liquid feed, feed a suitable heavy sugar syrup. Feed in the evening where possible and avoid leaving spills around the apiary, as they can trigger robbing. Use a feeder that bees can access safely and check that it is not leaking.

Once temperatures are consistently low, syrup may be difficult for bees to process and dry down. Fondant is usually the safer emergency feed at that stage. Place it where the cluster can reach it, above the brood area, and check its condition during winter visits. Honey from known healthy colonies can be a useful bee food, but avoid feeding honey of unknown origin because of disease risk.

Make sure the bees can reach their food

A colony may starve beside full frames if prolonged cold keeps the cluster from moving sideways. This is one reason why a good autumn layout matters. Put adequate stores around and above the brood nest before winter, rather than leaving all the food at the far edges of the box.

Remove the queen excluder after the final honey harvest. Leaving one in place can prevent the queen moving with the cluster as it follows stores upwards, with serious consequences in a cold spell.

Make the hive weatherproof, not airtight

British winters are often wet and changeable rather than continuously freezing. Damp inside a hive can be more damaging than cold, particularly when condensation drips onto the cluster. Your aim is to keep rain out, allow moisture to escape and avoid creating unnecessary draughts through the bees’ living space.

Check that the roof is sound, heavy enough not to lift in wind and free from cracks. Replace damaged crownboards or roofs, and ensure water cannot pool on top. A slight forward tilt helps rain run away from the entrance rather than into the floor.

An open mesh floor is commonly left open through winter, often with the inspection tray removed or used only briefly for mite monitoring. The details depend on your hive design and site, but avoid sealing every gap in the belief that bees need a warm, enclosed box. Bees regulate the cluster temperature themselves. They benefit more from a dry, sheltered hive than from a stuffy, damp one.

Roof insulation can reduce condensation and slow heat loss through the top of the hive. It should be dry, secure and positioned above the crownboard so it does not restrict bee space or absorb water. There is no single arrangement that suits every apiary, so observe how your hives perform rather than copying a set-up blindly.

Protect entrances and secure the site

Fit mouse guards before mice begin looking for warm, food-filled homes. A mouse in a hive can destroy comb, contaminate frames and disturb the colony. Choose a guard that still gives bees a clear route for cleansing flights, and check it has not become blocked by dead bees, snow or debris.

Reduce an oversized entrance if wasps, robbing bees or cold winds are causing trouble, but do not close the hive completely. A small entrance remains necessary for ventilation and for bees to leave when the weather allows. In exposed areas, consider a windbreak, but avoid placing hives in a permanently shaded, damp corner.

Winter storms can shift roofs, topple hives and loosen straps. Make sure each hive is level side-to-side, stable on its stand and secured if your site is windy. Ratchet straps are useful, provided they are fitted firmly without crushing timber or making inspections awkward. If woodpeckers are active in your area, a protective cage or barrier around the hive may be needed before damage begins.

How to prepare hives for winter without over-inspecting

The final thorough inspection should happen while the weather is still suitable for opening a hive. After that, winter management is mostly observation. Opening a hive repeatedly in cold conditions breaks the cluster’s seal and gains little unless there is a genuine concern.

Instead, visit the apiary on a dry, calm day. Look at the entrance for normal activity during mild spells, listen for a quiet hum if you have reason to check, and heft each hive. Clear only obvious entrance blockages. If a hive feels unexpectedly light, provide fondant promptly rather than waiting for a warmer day that may not come.

Keep notes on colony strength, treatment dates, feed given and hive weight. These records make spring decisions much easier. They also reveal patterns: perhaps one stand is too exposed, one colony always needs more stores, or a particular queen produces a smaller winter cluster.

Do not be alarmed by a quiet hive. Bees conserve energy in cold weather and may not fly for days. A burst of activity on a mild winter afternoon, including cleansing flights, is usually normal. What matters is whether the colony remains fed, dry and undisturbed enough to reach the first reliable spring forage.

A calm autumn afternoon spent checking stores, securing a roof and making a clear note in your records can save a colony from a problem that is much harder to fix in January. Prepare carefully, then give the bees the space to do what they do best: cluster, conserve and wait for spring.
