A warm afternoon in March can make a colony look busy and prosperous, but spring losses often begin when bees run out of food during the cold nights that follow. This guide to spring hive management is built around that tension: help colonies respond to increasing forage without chilling brood, encouraging starvation or letting swarm preparations get ahead of you.
For UK beekeepers, the season rarely follows a neat calendar. Colonies in sheltered parts of Essex or London may build earlier than those exposed to cold winds in Lincolnshire, and a strong colony can need attention weeks before a neighbouring hive. Read the bees, the weather and the stores together.
Start with the right spring inspection
Choose a still, mild day when bees are flying well, ideally around 14°C or above. Your first proper inspection is not the moment for a long frame-by-frame examination. Open the hive with a purpose, work calmly, and close it before brood is left exposed for too long.
Lift the crownboard carefully and look for signs of life: bees covering frames, fresh pollen coming in, and a sensible amount of activity at the entrance. Then assess weight by gently hefting the hive from the rear. A light hive needs food before it needs a detailed inspection.
When conditions allow, look through the brood box for eggs, larvae and sealed brood. Eggs are the best immediate indication that a laying queen was present within the previous few days. A compact brood pattern is encouraging, although patchiness is not automatically a queen problem in early spring. A colony may simply be expanding unevenly after winter.
Also check for space. Bees need room for brood, pollen and incoming nectar. A brood nest packed tightly with stores can restrict the queen just when the colony needs to grow. Conversely, giving a small colony too much empty comb or an extra box too early can make it harder for bees to maintain warmth.
Food first: stores can disappear quickly
Spring forage is unreliable. Willow, blackthorn, dandelion and fruit blossom can provide welcome income, but several wet or cold days may prevent foraging altogether. Meanwhile, brood rearing increases the colony’s consumption at a surprising rate.
If stores are low, give fondant directly above the cluster, ideally over the feed hole in the crownboard. It is the safer choice during unsettled cold weather because it does not add moisture to the hive and does not usually stimulate the colony as strongly as syrup. Check that the bees can reach it, particularly if a colony is small.
Once temperatures are reliably mild and colonies are actively expanding, light syrup may be useful where stores are genuinely short. Feed only as much as needed and avoid spilling syrup around the apiary, which can trigger robbing. Remove feeders before a honey flow where supers intended for harvest are going on. Honey for people should never contain sugar syrup fed to the colony.
Do not assume a hive is safe because it feels busy. A populous colony can consume its remaining stores faster than a quiet one. Hefting every week between full inspections is a simple habit that can prevent a needless loss.
Make room without over-supering
A strong colony with brood across most of the brood box may need more laying space. If you use a single brood box, this may mean moving a frame of stores to the outside of the box and replacing it with drawn comb beside, rather than through, the brood nest. Avoid splitting the brood nest with empty foundation during cool spells.
Adding a super is about colony strength and incoming forage, not a fixed date. Put one on when bees are covering the brood frames well and there is a realistic prospect of a flow. Drawn comb is far easier for bees to use than foundation, especially during changeable weather. Foundation can still be useful, but it asks the colony to spend energy making wax at the same time as raising brood.
If you run double brood boxes, inspect enough of both boxes to understand where the queen is laying and whether the colony has space. The management principle remains the same: give productive bees room, but do not add cold, empty volume just because the calendar says spring.
Swarm prevention starts before queen cells appear
A colony that survived winter well can become a swarm risk quickly. Congestion, a restricted queen, an ageing queen and a sudden nectar flow all contribute. Weekly inspections are sensible once colonies are building strongly, particularly from April onwards, though timing varies widely by area and season.
During swarm season, examine the lower edges of brood frames for queen cups and queen cells. Empty cups are normal and do not require action. Charged queen cells containing an egg or larva, especially with royal jelly, tell you the colony is preparing to replace or swarm from its queen. Do not simply remove cells and hope the problem has gone away. If the colony has decided to swarm, it will often build more.
Choose a recognised swarm-control method that suits your equipment, experience and aims. An artificial swarm can retain the flying bees and separate them from the old queen, while a nucleus split can create another colony if you have the space and capacity to manage it. Both methods require follow-up inspections. The trade-off is straightforward: preventing a swarm protects your stock and reduces disruption, but splitting a colony can reduce its honey crop and creates more colonies to feed, monitor and house.
Keep a record of each inspection. Note queen cells, brood pattern, stores, temperament, disease concerns and any action taken. Good notes turn spring management from guesswork into useful information for the next visit.
Keep disease and varroa in view
Spring enthusiasm should not make disease checks an afterthought. Look for unusual brood cappings, sunken or perforated cells, twisted larvae, or a foul smell from the brood nest. If you suspect American or European foulbrood, avoid moving combs, bees or equipment from the colony. Close the hive and seek advice from the relevant bee health authority or bee inspector.
Varroa levels can rise quickly as brood expands. A spring assessment helps you decide whether intervention is needed and gives you a baseline before the main season. The most suitable monitoring and treatment plan depends on your colony, the time of year, whether honey supers are present and the products authorised for use. Follow the product instructions precisely and record what you use.
Do not focus only on mites you can see on adult bees. Monitoring methods provide a much more useful picture than a casual glance. Healthy, well-fed colonies with young queens and controlled varroa are generally better placed to make the most of spring forage.
Match every task to the weather
The most useful piece of spring hive management advice is also the least glamorous: resist rushing. Bees cope with cool weather by clustering and regulating the temperature around their brood. Repeatedly pulling apart a hive on marginal days can set them back, especially if the colony is small.
Plan short visits with one clear objective. Perhaps today is a stores check and fondant top-up. On the next suitable day, it may be a brood assessment and space check. During swarm season, the objective becomes finding evidence of queen cells. This approach is kinder to the colony and makes it less likely that you overlook the important signs while trying to do everything at once.
Prepare equipment before opening the hive. Have your smoker lit but cool, a clean hive tool ready, spare frames available and a plan for any queen cells you may find. If you need to take photographs or consult notes, do so after closing up rather than leaving brood exposed.
Spring rewards attention rather than interference. A few well-timed checks, enough food, appropriate space and early swarm planning give a colony the chance to build strongly for the season ahead – while still allowing the bees to set the pace.
