A colony can fill several supers in a few weeks, then appear to stop overnight when the weather turns or a nectar flow ends. That is why there is no single useful answer to how much honey per hive. A UK hive might provide no harvest at all, 15-30 kg of surplus in an average season, or considerably more in an exceptional location and year. The figure that matters is not the biggest crop quoted by another beekeeper. It is the amount you can remove without leaving your bees short.
For most hobbyists, the practical aim is simple: let the colony build enough stores for itself first, then harvest only the genuine surplus. Good beekeeping is not about taking every frame that looks full.
How much honey per hive is realistic in the UK?
A well-established, healthy colony in a productive area may yield roughly 15-30 kg of harvestable honey in a season. That is a sensible planning range, not a promise. One National super can hold around 10-15 kg of honey when fully drawn, filled and capped, although the exact weight varies with frame type, comb age and how thoroughly the bees have filled it.
Some colonies produce 40 kg or more when they are strong at the right time and sit beside long, rich nectar flows. Oilseed rape, lime, bramble, clover, heather and borage can all make a striking difference. Yet a poor spring, prolonged rain, drought, a swarm or a shortage of forage can reduce the crop to zero. A first-year colony started from a nucleus should usually be judged by its survival and development, not by whether it fills supers.
It also helps to separate two different questions. A colony may make a large quantity of honey over the season, but it consumes a great deal of nectar and honey to rear brood, regulate the hive and fly. The harvest is only what remains after those needs are met. A hive can look busy and healthy while offering little that is safe to take.
The factors that decide your honey yield
The queen and colony population set the starting point. A productive queen with a large, healthy workforce before a major nectar flow gives the colony the best chance of collecting a surplus. A colony that builds late in spring may be perfectly sound, but it has fewer foragers available when forage is at its best.
Swarming is one of the biggest reasons a promising crop disappears. Once a colony has swarmed, the remaining bees must raise or accept a new queen, wait for her to mate and allow time for new workers to emerge. That interruption can cost much of a short honey flow. Regular spring inspections, appropriate space and timely swarm control protect both the colony and the potential crop.
Location is equally decisive. Two hives managed in the same way can produce very different amounts of honey a few miles apart. Gardens, hedgerows, woodland, arable crops, urban planting and nearby heath each offer different forage patterns. In Lincolnshire and other agricultural areas, a strong early crop may be followed by a noticeable nectar gap. In towns, varied planting can sometimes provide a steadier trickle, but it is rarely predictable.
Weather controls whether flowers provide nectar and whether bees can collect it. Warm, settled days may bring a rapid increase in weight. Cold wind, rain or intense dry spells can stop foraging or reduce nectar secretion. A good beekeeper reads the hive and the season rather than assuming last year’s yield will repeat itself.
Finally, the hive itself needs managing for space. Add a super before the bees are crowded, ideally as the existing super is being well used. Add it too late and congestion can contribute to swarming; add many empty boxes too early and a smaller colony may struggle to occupy and protect them. Drawn comb gives an established colony a head start, because producing wax costs energy and honey.
Leave enough honey for the bees
The most important number is not your harvest total. It is the colony’s winter requirement.
As a broad UK guide, many full-sized colonies need around 18-25 kg of stores going into winter. Requirements vary with hive type, colony size, local exposure and the length of the winter. A colony on a sheltered site in the south may use stores differently from one in a cold, exposed position. A large colony can also consume more than expected during a long spell of poor flying weather in early spring.
For this reason, do not treat a fixed number as a substitute for inspecting stores. Lift the back of the hive periodically to assess its weight, and check frames when conditions allow. The brood box should feel reassuringly heavy after the honey crop has been removed. If it does not, feeding a suitable sugar syrup promptly may be necessary. Feeding is responsible husbandry, but it is better not to create the need by harvesting too aggressively.
Honey stored in the brood box is generally the bees’ reserve. Supers are normally where the beekeeper expects a surplus, but even super honey may need to stay if the brood box is light or the season has closed early. There is no prize for extracting a final super in September only to feed the colony heavily afterwards.
Heather areas require particular care. Ling heather can provide a valuable late crop, but its jelly-like honey is difficult to extract conventionally and colonies may still need sufficient accessible stores for winter. Similarly, oilseed rape honey should be removed promptly once ripe because it can set hard in the comb, but never at the expense of leaving the brood nest under-provisioned.
When is honey safe to harvest?
Harvest honey when it is properly ripened and capped. As a practical rule, look for mostly capped frames, with roughly 80 per cent or more of the comb sealed. Uncapped nectar can have too high a water content and may ferment in the jar. A refractometer gives the clearest answer if you are producing honey for sale or want more certainty.
Only remove frames from supers that are clearly surplus to the colony’s requirements. Avoid taking honey during a dearth unless you are confident about the colony’s stores and local forage. Be aware that bees can use a seemingly abundant super very quickly when rain prevents flying for days.
Timing also matters for treatments. If a varroa treatment is due after the main crop, remove supers intended for human consumption first and follow the product instructions exactly. Do not put extracted supers back on a treated colony if the treatment label says otherwise. Honey quality and food safety depend on good timing as much as on clean extraction equipment.
Use a clearer board, bee escape or another calm method to remove bees from supers. Shake and brush frames carefully if needed, but avoid creating a frenzy at the hive entrance. Take honey indoors promptly, keep it covered from wasps and robbing bees, and extract in a clean, warm room. The less hurried the process, the easier it is to protect both your crop and the colony.
A better way to track honey per hive
Rather than comparing yourself with a headline yield, keep a simple record for every colony. Note its origin and queen age, when it first occupied a super, swarm-control actions, supers added, harvest weight, treatments and its estimated stores at the end of summer. After two or three seasons, those notes will show which sites, colonies and forage periods genuinely produce for you.
A hive scale is useful but not essential. Even occasional weights can reveal when a nectar flow begins, when it stops and whether a colony is consuming stores. For many beekeepers, weighing extracted honey separately from the hive is enough to build a realistic picture. Record the weight of the honey, not just the number of jars, as jar sizes can make modest crops look deceptively large.
If you are keeping bees for a corporate site, an experience day or a small local honey business, build your plans around conservative yields. A hive adoption or gifting programme should never depend on every colony producing a set number of jars. Weather and bee welfare must set the timetable, not a delivery target.
The most satisfying harvest is one taken from a thriving colony that enters winter heavy with stores. Check the bees first, take the true surplus second, and let each season teach you what your apiary can realistically provide.
