If you are weighing up cedar hives vs poly hives, you are probably at the point where brochure claims stop being useful. On paper, both can house a strong, productive colony. In a British apiary, though, the differences show up quickly – in wintering, spring build-up, lifting, maintenance and how much time you want to spend looking after the equipment itself.
For most UK beekeepers, this is not really a question of which hive is universally better. It is a question of what suits your site, your back, your budget and the way you keep bees.
Cedar hives vs poly hives: the real difference
Cedar is a traditional timber choice and for good reason. It is durable, stable and attractive, and many beekeepers like the feel of working wooden kit. A well-made cedar hive can last for years if looked after properly, and it tends to age in a way people find pleasing rather than scruffy.
Poly hives are made from dense expanded polystyrene. That puts some beekeepers off immediately, usually because they imagine flimsy packaging material. Good poly hive parts are not that. They are designed for outdoor use, and the main selling point is insulation. Poly retains heat far better than timber, which affects how colonies use stores and how quickly they get going when temperatures are still marginal.
That single difference – natural timber versus high-insulation moulded material – drives most of the practical pros and cons.
Insulation and colony performance
In the UK climate, insulation matters. Long damp winters, cold springs and stop-start nectar flows can all slow a colony down. Poly hives help bees maintain brood nest temperature with less effort, which can mean lower winter consumption and earlier spring development.
That does not mean bees in cedar hives struggle. Plenty of excellent beekeepers run strong colonies in cedar National hives year after year. But cedar offers less inherent insulation, so colony management and site conditions have a bigger influence. A sheltered apiary, good stock, adequate stores and sensible ventilation all become more important.
For beginners, poly can sometimes feel more forgiving. Colonies often come through winter well and build up quickly. For experienced beekeepers, that insulation can be an advantage in early season queen rearing, nuc production and making the most of shorter weather windows.
There is a trade-off, though. Faster spring build-up can also mean colonies hit swarm pressure sooner if inspections and supering are not timed well. Better insulation does not remove management demands. It can increase them at key points in the season.
Weight and handling
This is where many people make their decision.
Cedar is lighter than some other timbers, but a full wooden brood box or super is still no joke once it is packed with bees, brood, stores or honey. If you move kit often, work multiple colonies, or simply want to reduce strain, poly has a clear advantage. Empty poly boxes are noticeably lighter and easier to handle.
That matters more than many new beekeepers expect. The first few inspections may seem straightforward, but after a full season of lifting roofs, supers and brood boxes, weight becomes a practical issue rather than a theoretical one. For older beekeepers, anyone managing a larger apiary, or those recovering from injury, poly can make beekeeping far more manageable.
The lighter weight of poly does come with a small caveat. In exposed sites, roofs and lighter components may need securing properly. That is not difficult, but it is worth factoring in if your apiary catches strong wind.
Durability and maintenance
Cedar has an excellent reputation for longevity. If the joints are well made and the hive is maintained properly, it can last a very long time. It also tends to be easier to repair. A damaged runner, split panel or worn section can often be fixed rather than replaced outright.
Poly is durable in a different way. It does not rot, and it is not bothered by damp in the same way timber is. But it can be dented, gouged or damaged if handled roughly, and some parts are less straightforward to repair neatly. Surface damage is often cosmetic, but deep scrapes can become annoying over time.
Maintenance is another dividing line. Cedar usually needs protective treatment on the outside if you want it to stay in good condition. Some keepers do this routinely and do not mind it. Others buy cedar and then resent the upkeep. Poly hives also need coating with the right exterior paint to protect against UV and weathering, so they are not maintenance-free either. The difference is that timber care often feels ongoing, while poly care tends to be more occasional touch-up work.
Cleaning and hygiene
Hygiene matters whatever hive material you choose. Cedar can be scraped, scorched and cleaned in the traditional way, which many beekeepers value. There is reassurance in being able to flame the inside of wooden boxes between uses where appropriate.
Poly cannot be scorched in the same way, so cleaning relies on washing, scraping carefully and using products suitable for the material. That is perfectly workable, but some beekeepers still prefer timber because the disease control routine feels more familiar and more hard-wearing.
If you are running a small number of hives and keeping on top of equipment rotation, either can be managed well. If you strongly prefer traditional cleaning methods, cedar may feel simpler.
Appearance, feel and beekeeper preference
This part is subjective, but it is real.
Some people simply prefer cedar. It looks like a beehive should look, it fits the image many of us first had of beekeeping, and it feels solid and traditional in use. If your bees are in a garden, educational setting or visitor-facing apiary, appearance may matter more than people admit.
Poly is more practical-looking. Modern poly kit has improved a lot, but it will never have the same visual appeal as a neatly kept cedar hive. For some beekeepers that does not matter at all. For others, it matters every time they walk into the apiary.
Neither view is wrong. If you dislike the look and feel of your equipment, you are less likely to enjoy working with it.

Poly hives are often cheaper to buy than high-quality cedar equivalents, especially when you are setting up multiple colonies. That lower upfront cost can make expansion easier. Add the benefits of insulation and lighter handling, and poly can represent very good value.
Cedar can cost more initially, particularly if you want well-finished kit from a reputable maker. But it may hold up for years and remain serviceable with sensible care. If you value repairability, traditional appearance and long-term durability, the higher purchase price may feel justified.
The best way to think about cost is not cheap versus expensive. Think in terms of total usefulness. If a slightly dearer hive suits your management style and lasts well, it may be the better buy. If a lighter, warmer hive helps your bees and makes inspections easier, that value also adds up quickly.
Which suits beginners, and which suits experienced beekeepers?
For beginners in the UK, poly is often easier to recommend than it once was. Better insulation can help colonies through variable weather, and the lighter weight makes routine handling less daunting. If you are starting with one or two colonies and want practical equipment that reduces effort, poly is a sensible choice.
Cedar still suits beginners who want traditional kit, expect to stay with the craft, and do not mind the extra weight and maintenance. Many training apiaries use wooden hives, so beginners may also find cedar more familiar at first.
Experienced beekeepers often choose based on purpose. Those focused on production, nucs, queen rearing or running bigger numbers may favour poly for speed and ease. Those who enjoy conventional timber kit, want maximum compatibility with existing equipment, or simply prefer the feel of wood often stay with cedar.
There is also no rule saying you must choose one forever. Plenty of beekeepers use both. Cedar in a home apiary and poly for out-apiaries, nucs or mating units is a perfectly sensible setup.
So which hive should you buy?
If your priorities are insulation, lighter lifting, strong overwintering potential and lower initial cost, poly is likely the better fit. If your priorities are traditional appearance, a familiar working feel, straightforward repair and the satisfaction of well-made timber kit, cedar will probably suit you better.
What matters most is buying decent-quality equipment in a format compatible with the rest of your apiary, then learning to manage it well. A poor beekeeper with expensive kit is still a poor beekeeper. A thoughtful beekeeper can do very well with either.
If you are still torn, handle both before you buy. Lift them, inspect the joints and finishes, and think honestly about how and where you keep bees. The best hive is the one you will use confidently, maintain properly and not curse every time you have to move it.
