Poly hives are made from dense expanded polystyrene. Cedar hives, usually western red cedar, are wooden and have long been a standard choice for British beekeepers. Both can keep bees very successfully. Neither is automatically better in every yard.

Poly is durable in a different way. It does not rot, and it copes well with damp conditions. But it can dent, chip or suffer surface damage if handled roughly. Hive tools can gouge it. Straps can mark it. A careless knock during transport may do cosmetic damage more easily than it would on timber.

This is where beekeeper habits matter. If you are gentle with equipment and want low-maintenance insulation, poly often holds up very well. If your kit gets hard use, frequent moving or rough stacking, cedar may age more gracefully.

Neither material is indestructible. Cedar can split. Poly can crack. The better question is which type of wear you are happier dealing with.

Cedar usually asks more of you over time. Even when left untreated to weather naturally, it benefits from proper care and storage. Some keepers prefer to treat the exterior, and many will repaint or preserve parts as the years go on. Wooden components can also swell, warp or loosen with age and weather.

Poly is generally lower maintenance. It does not need preservative, and external cleaning is straightforward. Many poly hives are painted for UV protection and appearance, but routine upkeep is still usually simpler than with timber.

The trade-off is that repairs are less traditional. If a cedar roof edge wears out, most people understand the fix. With poly, repairs can be perfectly workable, but they feel less intuitive to some beekeepers.

However, price should not be viewed in isolation. If a cedar hive lasts for many years and you are happy maintaining it, the long-term value may be excellent. If poly helps colonies winter better in your area and reduces physical strain, that value is practical rather than purely financial.

For commercial or semi-commercial beekeepers, replacing and handling large amounts of kit changes the maths. For hobbyists with one or two colonies, aesthetics and personal preference often carry more weight.

For a new beekeeper, poly is often the easier starting point. It is light, forgiving in cooler conditions and simple to manage. If you are learning inspections, judging stores and trying to avoid unnecessary strain, those are real benefits.

Beginners also worry a great deal about winter. That is understandable. A poly hive will not solve poor husbandry, but it can remove one variable by providing stronger insulation through colder periods.

Some beekeepers simply enjoy working with wood. Others want practical equipment that performs well and keeps lifting to a minimum. Both are reasonable positions.

When poly is the better fit

Poly tends to suit beekeepers who prioritise insulation, lighter handling and lower maintenance. It is particularly useful in exposed apiaries, for nucleus colonies, for early spring build-up and for anyone who does not want the extra weight of timber.

It also makes sense where physical ease is a major factor. If lifting heavy cedar boxes would put you off expanding your apiary or make routine inspections harder, poly is the sensible choice rather than the compromise.

When cedar is the better fit

Cedar suits beekeepers who value traditional materials, repairability and the solid feel of wooden kit. It is often preferred in established apiaries where matching existing equipment matters, and by those happy to carry out occasional maintenance.

It can also be the better fit where appearance matters, such as a garden apiary, a teaching site or a location where customers or visitors will see the hives regularly.

The answer is not always one or the other

Many experienced beekeepers end up using both. Cedar might be used for the main apiary, with poly for nucs, overwintering or sites where weather exposure is harsher. That mixed approach is often more practical than arguing for a single perfect material.
