If you’ve ever wanted to keep bees, join us to discover everything you need to know on this hands-on, knowledge based, practical workshop. From hives to honey, we’ll teach everything you need to know about how to care for and keep honeybees in an ethical and sustainable way.

Our hugely popular Beekeeping for Beginners course includes all the essential information you need to leave you confident about one of the most enjoyable (and oldest!) natural hobbies. The day begins at 10am and runs to approximately 4pm, on the grounds of the magnificent Burghley House Estate on the Lincolnshire-Cambridgeshire border in Stamford, close to Peterborough and Stamford train stations.
THEORY AND PRACTICALS
We will teach both theory and practical parts of beekeeping. The date shown is the practical day of the course, we will also run 2 online theory sessions alongside this to ensure you have all the knowledge needed. The theory will be held at 7.00pm to 8.30pm, the Tuesday before and Tuesday after the practical. Your course will therefore be over 3 sessions.
CONFIDENCE IN KEEPING BEES
We’ll have welcome refreshments ready for when you arrive and, after a quick opportunity to say hello to your fellow workshop students, it’s time to meet the bees!
- THE BEE BASICS: You’ll learn what is involved with taking up beekeeping; how honeybee colonies work and communicate; the life cycle of a colony; and the essentials to best understand the honeybee and their behaviour, and why it matters.
- DISCOVER: We’ll discuss how honey is made and the wide range of different types of honey available from different nectar sources, as unique in flavour as the landscape the bees have foraged on. You will have a greater understanding of the importance of having a good variety of flowers in the environment. And of course, when and how to harvest.
- BEEKEEPER: We’ll teach you all the common tasks you’ll need to perform to keep your bees happy! We’ll go through swarming and how honeybees survive the winter. You’ll also learn about some of the many different types of bee hives – and how to find out which is best for you. You’ll learn some of the most common diseases to look out for, as well as the most effective prevention methods.
- MEET THE BEES: During the all day practical you’ll get to put on a bee suit and meet our bees! We’ll provide everything you need, and guide you through how to safely, confidently and calmly work with these remarkable insects. You will be shown how to approach and open the hive, recognise the different types of bee (including how to spot the queen) and we’ll explain what they are doing in different parts of the hive as it happens.
- PRACTICALITIES: We will go through how to site your beehive safely and all the aspects you will need to consider before the most exciting part – getting your first colony of honeybees.
- YOUR TUTORS: As well as teaching we have been heavily involved in the creation of courses for our local beekeeping association, give beekeeping talks and provide guidance to beginners and more experienced beekeepers. We have been teaching beekeeping for a number of years and have trained almost 300 students and many of these go on to be successful beekeepers.
- There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and get practical advice on keeping bees, throughout the day.

Our courses are very popular and sell out quickly. They make ideal presents or treat yourself to learn this great art. We like to run our workshops fairly and honestly. Your booking secures a very limited place, so is non-refundable – if you can’t make it, you can send a friend or colleague instead.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
We are actively trying to help the environment, so all course confirmations and supporting information will be emailed to you, including a reminder the week before the workshop with details and directions to the apiary (remember to check your junk mail just in case).

All protective equipment provided for you including head veils must be worn for the duration of the activity.

All borrowed equipment must remain on site and returned to the designated area after use. The equipment remains the property of Bees & Co. and in the event of any damage being caused to the equipment through fault of the user, the participant is liable to pay for the repair/replacement.

All participants must understand that bees are a wild insect and their behaviour cannot be guaranteed. Whilst all efforts are made to safeguard our delegates from such dangers, accidents and injuries can happen. In agreeing to take part in this activity, you are acknowledging these dangers and agree to take part at your own discretion.
